This is one of the most popular events in the country. So much so, that it has even been made in to a TV show on FX. Men and Women both compete for thousands of dollars in this hard punching, knock down drag out brawl.
Sometimes even celebrities get in the ring. All the competitors wear 16-ounce boxing gloves and a regulation headgear.
The fight consists of 3 short 1 minute rounds with 1 minute rest rounds. It’s hard hitting and short duration. Don’t be caught off guard by the short length of fight time though, participants fight to exhaustion. They find out very quickly who’s tough unless they are thoroughly conditioned and trained. Knockouts are commonplace, and even boxers find it difficult to cope with the level of intensity and full contact in the finals.
The Coach’s Angle
I have had my fighters fight in the Tough Man contests and I think it affected them very positively as fighters. They are battle scarred with valuable experience and ready to fight at all times. They learn to react to aggression and in turn become aggressive fighters themselves. This makes good sense when I’m trying to develop that killer instinct effect for competition.
They are more mentally prepared and are physically conditioned to fight, not play. I have gained respect for the top competitors as genuine fighters because they prove they have the right stuff that it takes to control a real stand-up fistfight!
